NFL Wire Notes | League remembers 9-11 attacks

By Seattle Times news services
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Giants coach Tom Coughlin was in Jacksonville on Sept. 11, 2001. His son Tim, a bond trader, was somewhere in the south tower of the World Trade Center.
Amani Toomer looked out the window of his New Jersey home and watched in disbelief as the towers fell.
In Washington, LaVar Arrington felt a shudder as a jet slammed into the Pentagon.
Five years later, the 9-11 terrorist attacks feel like yesterday to members of the New York Giants. Over the week that followed, there would be a trip to ground zero and firehouses where widows of fallen firefighters cried on their shoulders.
When Coughlin looks at his grandchildren, Andrea and Timmy, he knows they exist because his son found a way down from around the 60th floor after hijackers crashed two planes into the buildings.
"To be honest with you, I'm very aware of the miracles that have taken place in my life," Coughlin said. "And that certainly is one of them."
Across the NFL on Sunday, teams observed moments of silence, rolled out U.S. flags and arranged for jet fighters to fly over stadiums to commemorate the five-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
Green's injury scary
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As Trent Green lay motionless on the turf at Arrowhead Stadium, more than 77,000 fans sat motionless in their seats.
His feet were not moving, nor were his hands. It was tough to tell if the popular quarterback, who for five years had been so indestructible, was even breathing.
From the moment Cincinnati's Robert Geathers unleashed a brutal hit until word came that the quarterback had regained consciousness, little was said at the Bengals-Chiefs game.
"You just start praying," said backup quarterback Damon Huard, a former Washington Husky. "You think about him, his family and his health."
Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson said Green had "pretty severe head trauma," but regained all his senses and feeling in his arms and legs.
Bush passes first test
CLEVELAND — Reggie Bush strolled down the hallway toward the team bus wearing a backpack, a blue L.A. Dodgers baseball cap and a smile. He looked like a college kid headed home from class.
School may be over for Bush. His pro education has just begun.
On Sunday, he passed his first test.
"I would probably give myself a 'B,' " he said. "I didn't get in the end zone."
Bush, whose arrival in New Orleans has given the city's football fans renewed optimism in the wake of Hurricane Katrina's devastation, finished with 141 total yards. The Heisman Trophy winner had 61 yards rushing on 14 attempts, caught eight passes for 58 yards and returned three punts for 22.
Polite T.O.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Terrell Owens gave the Dallas Cowboys almost everything they wanted in the season opener: big plays, a touchdown and no surly behavior.
The only thing missing was a victory.
He finished with six receptions for 80 yards and a score, but the Jaguars held him without a catch through much of the second half.
"I don't like coming in and starting with a loss, but by no means are we down on ourselves," said Owens, who said all the right things following his debut.
