Jerry Rice Retires With The 49ers
Ponders Pro-Golf Career
Aug. 24 - BCN - Peerless wide receiver Jerry Rice today signed a one-day contract with the San Francisco 49ers, the football team he helped to win three Super Bowls, and officially retired.

Rice last played for the 49ers in 2000. He later played for the Oakland Raiders for three seasons and played with them in his fourth Super Bowl, a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2003, before finishing his career with the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos.

Unlike former San Diego Charger Junior Seau, who announced his retirement earlier this month and then several days later agreed to put on the shoulder pads again for another year when the New England Patriots called, Rice said his retirement from football is permanent.
"I'm not going to pull a Junior Seau," Rice said.

Rice said he has not spent much time at the 49ers Santa Clara headquarters since he left the team after the 1999 season. He seemed a little melancholy when answering reporters' questions about returning today.
"It feels good to be here but I know it's not for long," Rice said. "You come back here, it brings back a lot of memories ... some good, some bad."
No matter how long it took for Rice to return to the 49ers, team co-owner John York said he was glad to have him.
"I am very happy and pleased that he's back. Jerry has done it on his own time and on his own schedule," York said.
Rice said his participation last fall in the reality television show "Dancing with the Stars," in which he came in second to former 98 Degrees singer Drew Lachey, helped his transition away from professional football.
"That got me through last season," Rice said. "I still think I beat that little kid."
Rice is currently hosting a radio show on Sirius satellite radio and said he is developing projects in Hollywood. He also has not ruled out a return to professional athletics in the Champions Tour, where senior golfers such as Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson currently play.
"My handicap is 1.7. I'm working on that. I have some aspirations there," Rice said.
Rice will be honored by the 49ers during halftime of the Nov. 19 game against the Seattle Seahawks.
