Ben Roethlisberger is out of the opener.

NFL Notes: Appendectomy shelves Steelers' Roethlisberger

The Associated Press
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had an emergency appendectomy Sunday and will miss Pittsburgh's season opener at home with Miami, the league's marquee opening-night game.
Steelers coach Bill Cowher said he was not sure how long Roethlisberger, who became ill before practice, will be out.
Charlie Batch, the former Detroit starter who was 2-0 as a fill-in last season when Roethlisberger hurt his knee, will start against the Dolphins on Thursday. Batch and Roethlisberger are the only quarterbacks on Pittsburgh's roster.
It is yet another medical setback for Roethlisberger, who nearly died in a June 12 motorcycle accident and made a remarkably fast recovery. He missed no practice time during training camp and played better in the exhibition season than he did a year ago before leading the Steelers over the Seahawks for their first Super Bowl victory in 26 years.
Roethlisberger missed four games last season because of knee injuries, one of which required surgery, and injured his right thumb late in the season. He later said he broke it, though the Steelers never confirmed that, but he missed no playing time because of that injury.
Pittsburgh receiver Hines Ward is listed as questionable for the game. He didn't have a full training-camp practice after Aug. 3 because of a sore hamstring.
The Steelers also re-signed cornerback Ike Taylor to a four-year contract extension that could be worth up to $22.5 million and includes $6.4 million in guaranteed money.
Meanwhile, the Dolphins claimed Cleveland running back Lee Suggs off waivers and signed receiver Marcus Vick — a former Virginia Tech quarterback who is the brother of Atlanta QB Michael Vick — to the practice squad. Vick had been waived by the team a day earlier.
The Dolphins placed offensive lineman Joe Toledo, a fourth-round draft choice from Washington, on injured reserve, meaning Toledo will miss the season.
Notes
• Defensive back Roc Alexander, a former Washington Husky who was cut by Denver earlier in the weekend, was picked up by the Houston Texans.
Running back Ron Dayne, also cut by Denver, reportedly could sign with the Texans as soon as today.
• Former Seahawk Rashad Moore, a defensive tackle who was let go by Oakland on Saturday, was claimed off waivers by the New York Jets. The Jets also claimed tight end Zachary Hilton, who caught 35 passes for the New Orleans Saints last season.
• Coach Tony Dungy's ties with Shaun King weren't enough to keep Tampa Bay's one-time starting quarterback on the Indianapolis' Colts roster.
King, who started for Dungy when he coached Tampa Bay to the NFC Championship Game in 2000, was one of the veterans cut by Indianapolis, which announced its final roster a day after the actual cuts were made. His release leaves the Colts with Jim Sorgi behind starter Peyton Manning.
• Minnesota signed two veterans, defensive back Rashad Baker (previously with Buffalo) and running back Artose Pinner (Detroit's second-leading rusher last season).
• New England, still in the market for wide receivers with Deion Branch's continuing holdout, claimed wide receiver Jonathan Smith off waivers from Buffalo. The Patriots cut Bam Childress, whose 11 catches in the exhibition season led all of their wideouts.
On Saturday, the Patriots traded for another wide receiver, Doug Gabriel, from Oakland.
• Jacksonville signed ex-UW running back Rich Alexis, who was cut Saturday, to its practice squad.
