ASHWAUBENON -- It was an “only in Green Bay” experience. Dozens of Green Bay Packers fans stood in the middle of a lightning storm gripping a metal fence to welcome Brett Favre back to town on Sunday evening.
Ignoring the intermittent rain and constant flashes of lightning, fans began showing up outside the Executive Air terminal more than three hours before Favre, accompanied by his wife, Deanna, arrived to cheers and chants shortly after 7 p.m. on a charter flight from Hattiesburg, Miss.
“I had tears running down my face when I heard about it,” said Paula Piton of Ashwaubenon. “I am so excited.”
“I think this is what the majority of Green Bay wants,” said Lindi Scholtz of Green Bay.
There were false alarms. A private jet landed and pulled up to the door outside the terminal shortly before 6 p.m., causing fans to rush to the fences bordering the tarmac, only to be disappointed when it wasn’t Favre who deplaned.
Some fans monitored the flight of Favre’s jet through the Internet while others brought out their signs of support.
“Brett Welcome Home,” was the sign held by Tom Dudzik of Green Bay.
Barb Schire of Wausau killed some of the waiting time in the main terminal where she purchased a pink No. 4 jersey.
When the jet landed from the northwest at 7:06 p.m., cheers rang out. When Favre followed his wife down the steps of the jet and into the waiting Escalade, the fans chanted, “We Want Brett,” drawing a wave from Favre.
Favre took the wheel and Deanna Favre rode shotgun and they drove to an airport exit east of the main terminal, followed high above by a Milwaukee television station’s helicopter that gave the entire episode an O.J. Simpson flavor.
“It’s the most we can ask for,” said Perry Bovee of Appleton, referring to Favre’s return to Green Bay.
