Favre Throws Well In Friday Practice

Larry McCarren
Reporting
(AP) GREEN BAY Brett Favre fired tight spirals in practice Friday, giving signs that he's improving from the elbow injury that knocked him out of last week's loss to New England.

The encouraging development comes even though the 37-year old admitted he's struggling with feeling his grip on the ball. He says two fingers were stuck shut after the injury on Sunday.

Favre gets an extra day to recover from the injury because the Packers don't play until Monday night at Seattle. He has started an NFL quarterback record 251 consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Ahman Green played a variety of roles with the Seattle Seahawks in 1998 and 1999. Now he's returning to play in Seattle for the first time since he was traded to the Green Bay Packers in 2000.

He says he hasn't forgotten the place where he first got the chance to show his versatility as a runner.

In Green Bay he went on to post five consecutive one-thousand-yard seasons from 2000 through 2004 and made four consecutive Pro Bowls.

Seattle is still coached by Mike Holmgren, but the only players left from when Green played for the Seahawks are tackle Walter Jones, fullback Mack Strong, tight end Itula Mili and guard Chris Gray.

An injury limited Green to just five games last season and 255 yards rushing, but he's had a resurgence so far this year after signing a one-year deal in the offseason.

Green has had four 100-yard games but missed two others with hamstring injuries. Still, he's managed to run for 644 yards and three touchdowns and is on pace for another thousand-yard season if he averages 60 yards a game for the final six games.

Favre Confident He'll Be Fine

by Mike Spofford, Packers.com
posted 11/22/2006

Quarterback Brett Favre is still feeling tingling in the last two fingers of his throwing hand, and as of Wednesday afternoon he can't throw the football exactly how he'd like to.

But he says there's no pain in his elbow, and he expects to play on Monday night at Seattle and keep his consecutive starts streak in tact.

"At this point I'm confident I'll be OK," Favre said at his news conference.

Favre took a shot to the ulnar nerve in his right elbow while getting sacked last Sunday against New England late in the second quarter and missed the rest of the game.

Favre revealed on Wednesday that his elbow was knocked by the cast on Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi's right hand. With Tully Banta-Cain holding Favre's legs, Bruschi finished the sack with an upper body tackle. Television angles didn't show Bruschi's casted hand hitting Favre's elbow and only showed the elbow hitting the ground as Favre went down.

"There was nowhere to go, and I just saw him coming and tried to protect the ball, and when he came in, the cast on his right hand caught me just perfect on the nerve," Favre said.

"The cast kind of makes more sense, because otherwise I thought it was like he poked me or a knuckle or something caught me. As bad as it felt I figured he had to break a knuckle or something, but he had a cast on his hand."

Favre said he wanted to come back in, particularly because the injury wasn't painful, but when he tried to make a couple of throws during halftime he simply couldn't get a strong enough grip on the ball.

"I just said there's no way," Favre said. "As much as I would love to go in and play, I'm going to make a bad situation worse. That was very difficult because mentally I felt fine.

"Today, it feels better. There is a bruise, and a little swelling. But as far as the pain goes, this is as minor an injury as I've had to even question whether or not I would play."

Sunday marked only the sixth time during Favre's streak of 231 consecutive starts (251 including playoffs) that he couldn't finish a game due to injury.

Interestingly, three of the previous five times, Favre had extra time to heal for the next game, just like he has one extra day this week with the Seattle game on Monday night.
In 2002 (knee) and 2004 (concussion), the games in which he was injured came right before the bye week. Also, in 1994 (hip), his injury came on a Thursday night game, and the Packers didn't play again until the following Monday night, 11 days later.

"I've been through this, not this type of injury, but I have been through this before," Favre said. "I think it's good we have an extra day for it to heal as well as to rest."

Favre said the tingling running down from the elbow nerve makes it feel as though his ring and pinky fingers are "asleep" or "thawing out."

By Monday, he's hoping they either wake up or thaw out completely. But unlike a muscle injury, Favre can't do anything to strengthen it or make it heal any faster or stronger. He simply has to take a wait-and-see approach.

Favre participated in the opening jog-through portion of practice on Wednesday to get a look at the initial installation of the game plan but sat out the rest of the workout.

"There's no doubt the damage or soreness is with the nerve, and unlike a hamstring or a groin or whatever, you can't strengthen a nerve back up," he said. "We're just more playing it by ear and seeing if day to day makes it a little bit better. We're being a little more cautious with it than we would with, say, a muscle injury."

Head Coach Mike McCarthy said Saturday would probably be the key day to try to have Favre practice if things continue to improve.

"I've been saying all along, just with his track record, I'll be surprised if he doesn't go Monday," McCarthy said.

If he does, it would continue Favre's ironman streak, a record for an NFL quarterback. Favre ranks the streak as the top accomplishment of his career, but not just because of the many injuries he has played through over his 15 years in Green Bay.

"I think more than the fact that I've played in every one of them physically, you have to play at a high enough level for them not to replace you," Favre said. "Yeah, there's been games where I've struggled and stretches where I didn't play up to par, but here we are 15 years later and I've played every game.

"More times than not I've given this team a chance to win and they've always felt confident with me as a starter, and I think that's as important as anything."

Favre has never concerned himself with records, but if he does play in the Packers' final six games, he would have a realistic chance to break Dan Marino's career record of 420 touchdown passes. With 409, Favre needs 12 to set a new mark, meaning he'll need two in every game from here on out.

But even as proud as he is of his ironman streak, Favre said he would never take the field just to keep it going or to try to break any records if playing through an injury was going to hurt the team.

"I'm as proud of the fact that I've played in every game as anything," Favre said. "Statistics and all those things come with playing, and I think that's just icing on the cake, all the other things.

"I would hope I wouldn't put this team in jeopardy by just doing it for selfish reasons. I want to make the right decisions, but I want to help this team win, give us the best chance to win."

AROUND THE NFL

Favre in, Rodgers out for Packers

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

November 21, 2006

The Green Bay Packers lost a quarterback for the season on Monday. It wasn't Brett Favre.

Backup Aaron Rodgers said he didn't know how he broke his left foot in the third quarter of Sunday's game against the New England Patriots and thought he was just feeling sorry for himself because of his poor performance.

Rodgers had replaced Favre, who hurt his elbow earlier in the game but is expected to return in time for Monday night's game at Seattle.

Rodgers' injury requires surgery, which he said probably will include placing a screw in his foot. He'll be sidelined for the rest of the season, and the Packers need another quarterback.

"I didn't want to come out of the game," Rodgers said. "I knew it was bothering me, but I still felt like I could make some plays and I wanted to be out there."

Rodgers said he told rookie Ingle Martin, the team's third quarterback, that he thought he had broken his foot and told the trainers in the fourth quarter he needed an X-ray.

But he finished the game, going four for 12 for 32 yards, and brushed off reporters Sunday while hobbling through the locker room with a noticeable limp. He apologized Monday.

"After finding out I'd be out for the season, it was a tough blow to take and I didn't feel like answering any questions," Rodgers said.

"On a personal level, you feel terrible for him, because the first thing you think about is here's a guy who has been here since March 20, he's been here every day going through the quarterback school, getting ready to potentially be the starter for our football team," Packers Coach Mike McCarthy said. "He finally gets the opportunity to play and that happens to him."

Favre, starting his 251st game including playoffs, injured a nerve in his elbow after being sacked just before halftime in the Packers' 35-0 loss.

He couldn't muster enough strength to adequately grip the football and missed completing a game for only the sixth time in his career because of an injury.

Favre was five for 15 for 73 yards when he left. The five completions were a career low for a start, while the 73 yards passing were his fewest since Oct. 20, 1994, when he was forced out of a game at Minnesota because of a severely bruised left hip.

McCarthy said Monday that Favre has most of the strength back in his elbow, but he wasn't ready to say the three-time most valuable player would practice this week.

"He's not very worried about it, which to them is a clear indication because he's been through this so long. [The team's doctors] trust his judgment based on their history with him," McCarthy said.

McCarthy said the team could elevate Martin, drafted in the fifth round, or look for a more experienced quarterback to back up Favre.

New Orleans Saints standout rookie receiver Marques Colston was listed as day to day because of a sprained left ankle suffered in a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

"We'll treat it and see how much pressure he can put on it," Saints Coach Sean Payton said. "It's just a matter how much weight it can support and how quickly he can come back off of it. Each day we'll get an idea maybe a little bit of his progress."

X-rays and an MRI exam were negative, Payton said.

Colston, a seventh-round draft choice from Hofstra, has 54 catches for 869 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns.

Arizona Cardinals defensive end Bertrand Berry will sit out the rest of the season after tearing his triceps in Sunday's victory over Detroit.

An MRI exam Monday revealed the seriousness of the injury, Coach Dennis Green said. Berry will undergo surgery to repair the tear, probably this week.

It is the second year in a row Berry had his season end prematurely.

Last year, he sat out the final eight games because of a torn pectoral muscle.

Berry leads the team in sacks with six.
Oakland Raiders running back LaMont Jordan underwent an MRI exam on his left knee, for an injury that could sideline him for the rest of the season.

Jordan, who has 434 yards in 114 carries, was injured in Sunday's loss to Kansas City.

The NFL announced that the kickoff for the Seattle Seahawks' game at Denver on Dec. 3 has been moved to 5:15 p.m. PST so that it can be televised by NBC.

Danny O'Neil
They're back: NFL tales that won't die

By Danny O'Neil
Seattle Times NFL reporter
The Packers have won three of their past four games, Brett Favre debuted his Lambeau Leap a few weeks back, and after nine games his touchdown passes actually outnumber his interceptions.
All the signs are there for a resurrection.

Oh, not of Favre. He's never gone anywhere. But the ruminations about his future will soon be repeated with a regularity and redundancy usually reserved for dead horses.
I'd rather do long division than read anything about Favre's potential retirement that does not include some sort of definitive statement from Favre. I'd rather dig a ditch than wade into the question of what it would take for him to return.

He is one of the great quarterbacks of this generation, and his arrival coincided with the revival of a historic franchise. The Packers had made the playoffs twice in the 20 years before he came in 1992; since then, they've made the postseason in 10 of the past 13 seasons. When Favre retires it will be a big deal for Green Bay and for the rest of the NFL. Until then, discussing his future is neither new, nor is it news. But that won't stop the question from being regurgitated across the country.

The good thing about the NFL's 16-game schedule is that it's so short that almost every game matters. The bad thing is the six days between games last long enough for the same themes to be recycled, repeated and reused into a mind-numbing rhythm. I need a T.O. Wait. That's a poorly chosen acronym since the last thing I need to hear about is that unrepentant egotist who's playing for the unmitigated control freak coaching Dallas.
It's a situation that has become scrutinized to the point that every pass Terrell Owens drops is followed by a breathless sideline report and a camera shot capturing Bill Parcells' pained mug. Well, after nine games, Owens is tied for the league lead in touchdown receptions with seven and the Cowboys are No. 6 in offensive yards despite switching quarterbacks. So much for all the apocalyptic predictions.
If there's an eruption in Dallas, let me know. Until then, there is no need to chronicle every single volcanic burp.
It's also not really necessary to explore Brian Urlacher's place in the Bears' lineage of linebackers. We get it. He plays the same position Dick Butkus and Mike Singletary did. But if he is the heir to that legacy, why have his peers ranked him one of the league's most overrated players the past couple years in Sports Illustrated's annual poll?
A final request is that rumors of the Patriots' demise stop being exaggerated, because the only thing that rivals the consistency of New England's recent success is the knee-jerk reaction to its every loss.
The veteran-cutting Patriots are getting their comeuppance. They've cut back too much. They've underestimated the delicate nature of clubhouse chemistry. They hate their coach. He looks like a rail-yard hobo.
Well, that last part is true, but that may just be part of Bill Belichick's plan to further humiliate the rest of the league. Not only will he beat you while using a 35-year-old wide receiver in his secondary, but he'll do it while wearing a headband straight out of a Jazzercise class and a sweatshirt with sleeves he apparently gnawed off with his teeth.
The Patriots enter today's game having lost two in a row for the first time since December 2002, and the question is whether the franchise that has been the gold standard for sustained success under the salary cap has finally eroded.
Hey, didn't we just do this a little more than a month ago? Yeah. It was Week 4 after New England lost in Denver and Tom Brady's body language was being read as if he were a third-base coach. Then the Patriots went to Cincinnati and body-slammed the previously undefeated Bengals.
The Patriots are still 6-3 and have won seven postseason games over the past three seasons. That's two more than the league's winningest active coach, Marty Schottenheimer, has won in 20 years.
So before talking about the Patriots' demise, I'll need to see the cold, dead body.
Until then, include it on the list of subjects in this league that I'd just as soon skip.

Brett Favre Voted FedEx Air Player Of The Week

posted 11/17/2006

Quarterback BRETT FAVRE of the Green Bay Packers and running back LA DAINIAN TOMLINSON of the San Diego Chargers are the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week for games played on November 12-13, the NFL announced Thursday.

Favre completed 24 of 42 passes for 347 yards, two touchdowns and a passer rating of 100.0 in the Packers' 23-17 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. He threw a five-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and followed that up with an 82-yard touchdown strike just before halftime.

Tomlinson carried 22 times for 104 yards and four touchdowns in the Chargers' 49-41 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. He scored on runs of two, four, nine and nine yards.

Favre and Tomlinson were selected from among finalists in air and ground categories through a record 199,995 fan votes on NFL.com and via Sprint wireless service. The other FedEx Express NFL Player of the Week finalists were quarterbacks PHILIP RIVERS of the San Diego Chargers and TONY ROMO of the Dallas Cowboys, while running backs FRANK GORE of the San Francisco 49ers and WILLIE PARKER of the Pittsburgh Steelers were the other finalists for the FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week.

Favre received 52 percent of the fan votes for FedEx Express NFL Player of the Week, while Rivers received 29 percent and Romo received 19 percent. Tomlinson's 45 percent of the fan votes for FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week beat out Parker's 44 percent and Gore's 11 percent.

Fans voted for more than their favorite players. The weekly FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week Awards are also a win for the local community. Along with the player awards, FedEx is awarding Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and Rady Children's Hospital, the children's hospitals in the winning players' markets, a check for $5,000.

The children's hospitals in the two season-long winner's markets, announced at Super Bowl XLI in South Florida, will be awarded $25,000 each. That means that FedEx will deliver nearly $250,000 to local children's hospitals around the country in recognition of the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week Award winners.

FedEx, the premier global provider of transportation, e-commerce and supply-chain management services, is the Official Delivery Service Sponsor of the NFL, Super Bowl and Pro Bowl. Through the weekly FedEx Air and Ground awards, FedEx recognizes those NFL players who represent the same speed, precision and teamwork that their customers have come to expect from the full range of FedEx air, ground, freight and international shipping services.

A Favre carving

Green Bay hasn't been able to establish any sort of consistency, but the Packers, led by their future Hall of Fame quarterback, are having more success than the experts predicted. That quarterback, Brett Favre, was sharp again versus the Vikings, leading Green Bay to a 23-17 win. Favre completed 24 of 42 passes for 347 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions, proving that he can still get it done in the NFL. Receiver Donald Driver, who had a career day with 191 yards receiving, was impressed with the effort. "I love that guy," Driver said. "I know what he's thinking. He knows what I'm thinking. That's a great combination. When it's all said and done, I'm just glad I'll be a part of his legacy."

Game Review: Packers Bounce Back With Another Road Win

by Mike Spofford, Packers.com
posted 11/12/2006

MINNEAPOLIS - The Green Bay Packers continue to show their resiliency on the road.

Back in Week 3 with an 0-2 record, they pulled together to win at NFC North Division rival Detroit. Then three weeks later, sitting at 1-4, they used their bye week to regroup for a much-needed victory at Miami.

Now on Sunday, fresh off an ugly loss at Buffalo, the Packers got their season back on track once again by coming to their most hated road venue, Minnesota's Metrodome, and posting a 23-17 triumph over the rival Vikings that required turnover-free offense, active defense and a few strokes of good fortune.

"This is a big win for us, especially here in this stadium where a lot of times we haven't been successful," linebacker Nick Barnett said. "We're leaving here with a win. We wanted to win last week, that was a heart-breaker for us, but we just have to continue this momentum."

All the offensive momentum on Sunday was created by receiver Donald Driver and quarterback Brett Favre.

The two connected on the game-turning touchdown play, an 82-yard catch-and-run on a slant pattern with 48 seconds left in the first half as the Packers reclaimed the lead at 17-14. That play capped a 97-yard drive for which the Packers took an aggressive approach despite being backed up near their own goal line with under 2 minutes left in the half.

But the stars' performances went far beyond that one play.

Driver finished with six catches for a career-high 191 yards, including 151 in the first half after his big reception just before intermission. He repeatedly beat the Minnesota defense over the middle and was the primary weapon with the ground game scuffling against the Vikings' tough front seven.

Meanwhile Favre wasn't sacked in 42 pass attempts and completed 24 passes for a season-high 347 yards and two touchdowns, the first a 5-yard swing pass to Noah Herron in the first quarter that staked Green Bay to an early 10-0 lead.

His quarterback rating of 100.0 reflected an error-free game in which Favre spread the ball around to seven different receivers and made several key third-down throws while compiling his highest yardage total since the NFC North clinching victory on Christmas Eve two seasons ago (365 yards).

"Our pass protection was outstanding today," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. "Brett had a ton of time to throw.

"When you're throwing the ball 40-plus times, that's tough for a quarterback. You're putting a lot on his shoulders, and I thought he made clean decisions."

Defensively, the Packers bounced back from a rough second quarter during which they allowed back-to-back touchdown drives by the Vikings. A coverage bust led to an easy 40-yard TD pass from Brad Johnson to Billy McMullen to pull Minnesota within 10-7.

One possession later, a 35-yard one-handed catch by Bethel Johnson set up another score for a 14-10 Vikings lead. McMullen recovered running back Chester Taylor's fumble in the end zone after Taylor (75 yards rushing, 20 receiving) caught a 15-yard pass over the middle and had the ball jarred loose on the goal line.

But the defense buckled down, allowing only three first downs over the Vikings' next seven possessions. Six of those drives ended in punts, including three straight three-and-outs at one point. The seventh stop was an interception by nickelback Patrick Dendy that the offense followed with a drive for a field goal to make it a two-score game at 23-14 with 2:11 left.

"We honed in on our technique a lot," Dendy said of the defense's second-half turnaround. "Everybody played a very good game. We gave up a couple big plays but we made some adjustments and made the plays when they counted."

Using an array of linebacker blitzes, the Packers harassed Johnson (18 of 30, 257 yards) and recorded four sacks accounting for 35 lost yards. The defense set the tone for that game plan early when Brady Poppinga got a clean shot on Johnson, knocking loose a fumble that Corey Williams recovered to set up Favre's first TD pass.

"We tried to always keep them guessing," defensive end Aaron Kampman said. "We were moving guys around. I played inside a little bit, outside we had guys blitzing, just rushing four or rushing three. The more multiple looks you give them, sometimes you can confuse guys, and there were times they were confused and we got home."

Ultimately the defense allowed only three points over the final 21/2 quarters, those coming on a Ryan Longwell field goal with 58 seconds left to pull Minnesota within 23-17.

That gave the Vikings one last chance, which looked threatening when they recovered an onside kick. But the recovery was nullified because Artrose Pinner was offsides, and the second onside attempt went out of bounds, giving the ball to the Packers for two kneel downs to seal the win.

The mistake by Penner was the final stroke of good fortune on a day the Packers got their share of breaks. Penner also was called for an illegal block in the back on Jarrett Bush that wiped out Bethel Johnson's 102-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half.

In addition, a shovel pass near the goal line to Ahman Green in the third quarter appeared to be a catch and a fumble, but fortunately the play was ruled incomplete. And on the next play, Dave Rayner's 24-yard field goal deflected off the left upright and went through.

"Let's give our team credit for sticking with it and being tenacious and not being denied," fullback William Henderson said. "It's difficult to come into this place and play well. It's definitely difficult to come in here and win. I'm just very proud of the fact that we stuck together and when they got up on us, we didn't lose our poise. Young guys, did not lose poise.

"I'm not saying we're a good team, but we're trying to reach for that good team reputation as well as consistency. It's a great thing to see them go out there, handle their business, and for us to come out victorious."

The Packers have no need to apologize for a few good bounces after some of the tough breaks they've dealt with in 2006. The bottom line is they're now 4-5, including 2-1 through the first round of division games and tied for second in the division with the Vikings, with a chance to hang around in the muddled NFC.

"It means a lot," said Green, who battled his way to 55 difficult yards on 22 carries. "It's a rivalry game and a division game, so it kind of counts double towards the end come December and January.

"We just have to continue to focus on the rest of our season, and we might be in the playoffs at the end of this thing."
