Favre's No. 4 to be retired on Sept. 8
Packers-Vikings square off during season opener

As if a season opener, summer weather and a chance to squash the Minnesota Vikings weren't enough, the Green Bay Packers are adding to the Sept. 8 game the event everyone has been waiting for — retiring Brett Favre's No. 4.
The Packers on Thursday announced the decision to retire Favre's number during the 2008 home opener.
That game "was already pretty much No. 1 before that," said Josh Schmitt, owner of Schmitty's Tickets. "It's going to be even more now."
After looking at the schedule, the combination of the energy of the first game and the national broadcast made the game a good choice for Favre's No. 4 retirement, said Packers President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Murphy.
While it wouldn't have been Schmitt's first choice — he was hoping for a less popular game — he said retiring Favre's number adds the final touch to the football game.
Ticket sales for the season opener were starting at about $275, Schmitt said, but higher demand will likely raise the cost to $300 or $325. Schmitt said he's sold more tickets to that game so far than to all the others combined.
"That game really had everything going for it before," he said. "But it will have everything and more going for it now."
Eran Roth, operations manager of Packer Fan Tours, said the earlier games typically sell better than the later ones because of the weather. Tickets will go fast, he said.
"People are excited," he said. "It's going to be a super special game. Here we have a combination of Brett Favre's retirement, good weather and a very good opponent in the Vikings, so we are expecting this to be a very good game."
Since the schedule was released Tuesday, Roth said his office has been crazy.
"It's been an interesting couple of days," he said. "Obviously, this will increase sales."
Schmitt said he had about 20 people on a waiting list for the Favre No. 4 retirement game — just waiting for the date to be decided.
"Whatever game it was, they wanted to be there," he said.
