Favre named USSA male athlete of year

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has been named the 2007 male athlete of the year by the United States Sports Academy.

The Academy Athlete of the Year is presented by msnbc.com and USATODAY.com and is the culmination of the yearlong Athlete of the Month program, which recognizes the accomplishments of men and women in sports around the globe.

In his 16th season with the Packers, Favre was named to his ninth Pro Bowl last week and has broken numerous records this season. He has thrown for more touchdown passes and more yards than anyone else at quarterback. He also has more victories at quarterback than anyone else.

Belgian tennis star Justin Henin was named the female athlete of the year.

Voting was online from Dec. 1-25. Golfer Tiger Woods finished second to Favre; New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady finished in third place. For the women, tennis star Venus Williams took second, just ahead of swimmer Natalie Coughlin.

Favre Receives Most Fan Votes For 2008 NFL Pro Bowl

posted 12/13/2007

Green Bay Packers quarterback BRETT FAVRE received 1,140,863 votes to lead all NFL All-Stars in balloting for the 2008 NFL Pro Bowl, NFL.com announced Thursday. Presented by Sprint, 2008 NFL Pro Bowl voting on NFL.com and on wireless phones with Sprint service ended on Tuesday, December 11.

There was a record 83.7 million votes cast on NFL.com and on wireless phones with Sprint service using more than 2,262,000 ballots. There were nearly 14 million more votes cast this year than last year.

New England Patriots quarterback TOM BRADY (1,037,608 votes) ranks second overall while Indianapolis Colts quarterback PEYTON MANNING (991,418 votes), Dallas Cowboys quarterback TONY ROMO (830,789 votes) and New England Patriots wide receiver RANDY MOSS (806,455 votes) round out the top five on NFL.com. TONY ROMO received the highest number of votes from voters using Sprint's service.

The AFC and NFC All-Star squads are made up of the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches. Each group's vote counts one-third towards determining the 43-man rosters that represent the American Football Conference and National Football Conference in the Pro Bowl. NFL players and coaches are casting their votes December 13-14.

The NFL is the only sports league that combines voting by fans, coaches and players to determine its all-star teams. It was the first professional sports league to offer online all-star voting in 1995.

The teams will be announced at 4 p.m. (ET) Tuesday, December 18 on a special NFL Total Access 2008 NFL Pro Bowl Selection Show on NFL Network. The Pro Bowl will be played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii on Sunday, February 10 and will be televised by FOX.

In addition to casting ballots on NFL.com/probowl, fans cast their Pro Bowl ballot by sending the text message "PRO" to 7777 from a phone with Sprint wireless service and voting for their favorite players at select positions.

Fans who voted for their Pro Bowl players were able to enter for a chance to win a trip to Hawaii to attend the NFL Pro Bowl in the 2008 NFL Pro Bowl Sweepstakes sponsored by Sprint. The Grand Prize includes an all-expense paid 5-day, 4-night trip for the winner and one guest to the 2008 NFL Pro Bowl in Honolulu. In addition to air transportation, ground transportation, hotel accommodations and two game tickets, the winner and guests will experience an insider tour of the sidelines and locker room at Aloha Stadium.

Brett Favre's standout season for the resurgent Green Bay Packers has earned him the title of 2007 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year, making him the fourth quarterback to win the award in its 53-year history.
The 38-year-old Favre joins fellow quarterbacks Terry Bradshaw (1979), Joe Montana (1990) and Tom Brady (2005) as recipients of the award, given to an athlete who symbolizes the ideals of sportsmanship.
Favre, a three-time NFL MVP, said in the cover story of the magazine's Dec. 10th issue that leadership is about finding ways to raise his team's level of play.
"You do that by setting an example, by doing things the right way. I've always shown up, I've always been prepared, I practice every day," Favre said. "I practice hard. I study. No matter what happens on the field, I never point blame at anybody else. Everything I do comes back to leadership, the example I want to set."
Favre has started a quarterback-record 249 consecutive games, and this year surpassed Dan Marino for career touchdown passes and pass attempts. He is 450 yards away from breaking Marino's career record of 61,361 yards.
Favre has had one of the best seasons of his 17-year career, completing 67.4 percent of his passes for 3,412 yards with 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
He's on pace to surpass his career marks in completion percentage, yards passing and fewest interceptions per attempts.
The magazine also recognized Favre's history of philanthropy, including his Fourward Foundation that's donated more than $4 million to charities in Wisconsin and Mississippi and assisted Mississippi's Gulf Coast counties after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade won the magazine's award last year.
